Theism, the position holding that a deity exists, can be argued for in various ways. The main sorts of arguments are
- Cosmological: which try to show the existence of God from the need for a cause or explanation for contingent things,
- Teleological: which try to show the existence of a Designer of the world, and
- Ontological: which try to show that God is logically required to exist.
Other less prominent sorts of arguments can be convincing: moral arguments, arguments from consciousness, etc.
Many theistic arguments are less convincing—mainly arguments built on ignorance of or bad interpretations of metaphysics.
